Brihadeeswara Temple is one of the most remarkable Hindu temples in India. Also known as the Big Temple, it was built during the Chola dynasty in the 11th century and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and its main attraction is the 66-metre-high vimana or tower. Visitors can admire the carved panels, sculptures and frescoes that adorn the temple walls. The temple is open from 6 am to 12:30 pm and 4 pm to 8:30 pm. However, it is closed on Mondays.
The Thanjavur Maratha Palace was the official residence of the Thanjavur Marathas, who ruled Thanjavur from the mid-17th century to the mid-19th century. Now a museum, it showcases the history, art, and culture of Thanjavur. Its main attractions are the Durbar Hall, the Arsenal Tower, and the Serfoji's Sarasvati Mahal Library, which houses a collection of rare books and manuscripts. The palace is open from 10 am to 5 pm on all days except Fridays and public holidays.
Gangaikonda Cholapuram was the capital of the Chola dynasty during the reign of Rajendra Chola I in the 11th century. The town and its temple are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can see the magnificent Brihadeeswara Temple, which is similar in design to the Brihadeeswara Temple in Thanjavur but smaller in size. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and has many carved panels and sculptures. The temple is open from 6 am to 12:30 pm and 4 pm to 8:30 pm on all days except Sundays when it is open from 8 am to 12:30 pm.
Siva Ganga Garden is a beautiful park that was built during the rule of the Nayak kings in the 16th century. It is located on the banks of the river Cauvery and has many fountains, flower beds, and trees. Visitors can take a boat ride along the river and enjoy the scenic views. The garden is open from 9 am to 7 pm on all days. However, the boat rides are available only from 4 pm to 6 pm.
Schwartz Church, also known as the New Jerusalem Church, was built in 1779 by Rev. Friedrich Christian Schwartz, a German missionary who worked in Thanjavur for more than 30 years. The church has a simple yet elegant design and is made of granite and brick. Visitors can see the memorials of Schwartz and other missionaries who worked in the area. The church is open from 7 am to 6 pm on all days.
If you have more time, you can visit the Serfoji's Sarasvati Mahal Library at the Thanjavur Maratha Palace or take a day trip to the nearby towns of Kumbakonam or Darasuram, which have many temples and historical sites. If you have less time, you can skip the Gangaikonda Cholapuram and visit the Sangeetha Mahal or the Art Gallery at the Thanjavur Maratha Palace. Make sure to carry sunscreen, a hat, and a water bottle, as the weather can be hot and humid. Also, be respectful of the local customs and traditions when you visit the temples and other religious sites.
