Explore one of the most spectacular & iconic temples in India, the Brihadeeswarar Temple. Built during the Chola dynasty, this UNESCO World Heritage site is known for its impressive architecture, intricate carvings, and massive Nandi Bull statue. Marvel at the beautiful gopurams (temple towers) and take a walk around the temple complex, which also includes a fascinating museum.
Start the day at the Schwartz Church, built by the Dutch in the 18th century. This tranquil Church is well-known for its unique architecture and stained glass windows. Then, head to the Thanjavur Palace Complex, a former residence of the Nayak and Maratha rulers. The palace complex boasts a mix of Tamil and European architecture with its massive quadrangular courtyard, Durbar Hall, and Saraswathi Mahal Library containing a vast collection of ancient palm leaf manuscripts.
Take a trip to the peaceful town of Thiruvaiyaru, the birthplace of the famous Carnatic composer Saint Thyagaraja. Visit the Thyagarajaswamy Temple, where the great composer used to offer his prayers, and see the samadhi of Thyagaraja in the nearby gardens. Later, go to the Sangeetha Mahal, a cultural complex which houses the Centre of Excellence for Traditional Music and Dance, showcasing some of the finest performances of Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam dance.
Discover the historic town of Gangaikonda Cholapuram, the second capital of the Chola dynasty. Visit the famous Brihadishwara Temple, featuring a 53-metre tall vimana and many other impressive architectural elements. Then, head to the Airavateswara Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its beautiful carvings and sculptures. Make sure to check out the famous musical pillars that produce different sounds when tapped.
If you have more time, you could add the following places to your itinerary: Alangudi (25 km from Thanjavur), known for its ancient Lord Guru Temple, and Kumbakonam (35 km from Thanjavur), famous for its temples and traditional South Indian food. If you have less time, you could skip Sangeetha Mahal or Airavateswara Temple or combine them. Make sure to wear comfortable footwear as there is a lot of walking involved. Also, carry water bottles and sunscreen to stay hydrated and protected from the sun.
