Explore the Edakkal Caves, located on Ambukutty Mala, which is 1,200 metres above sea level. These caves consist of ancient rock etchings, some of which date back to 6,000 BCE. The climb to the caves takes around 45 minutes and is steep in some places, so be prepared. The view from the top is breathtaking and worth the climb.
Visit Soochipara Waterfalls, also known as Sentinel Rock Waterfalls, a three-tiered waterfall surrounded by lush greenery. You can take a dip in the natural pool at the bottom of the falls or just enjoy the view. The cascading water and the beautiful surroundings make it a perfect spot to relax and rejuvenate.
Pookode Lake, a natural freshwater lake surrounded by forest, is a perfect spot for a picnic. Take a boat ride or walk along the paved path that circles the lake. You can spot different species of birds, animals and fish. Also, check out the freshwater aquarium and the children's park near the entrance.
Visit Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earth dam in India and the second-largest in Asia. The dam is built across the Karamanathodu river and is surrounded by lush green hills. You can take a speedboat ride and enjoy the scenic view or trek to the nearby hills for a panoramic view of the surrounding area.
Trek to the Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanad at an altitude of 2,100 metres. The trek to the peak takes around three hours and is moderately challenging. On the way, you can spot different species of flora and fauna, including the rare Neelakurinji flowers that bloom once every 12 years. The view from the top is awe-inspiring, and you can see the entire Wayanad district.
If you have more time, you can also visit Thirunelli Temple, an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and Kuruva Island, a beautiful river island with dense forests. If you have less time, you can skip Pookode Lake or Soochipara Waterfalls, depending on your interests. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and carry enough water and snacks for the trip. It is advisable to hire a local guide for the trek to Chembra Peak.
