Start your Wayanad adventure by visiting the serene Pookode Lake. This freshwater lake is surrounded by lush green forests and has a well-maintained recreational park for visitors to enjoy. Take a walk in the park, go for a boat ride on the lake or simply relax and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. Don't forget to capture the beautiful scenery around the lake in your camera.
Next on the itinerary is the Edakkal Caves which are a set of two natural caves filled with pictorial wall art and stone age carvings. As you climb up the hill to reach the entrance of the cave, you will witness incredible views of the surrounding mountains and forests. Once you reach inside the cave, you will be amazed at the ancient artwork and carvings on the walls. It is a must-visit place for history and nature enthusiasts.
For those interested in learning about the rich history of Wayanad, make sure to visit the Wayanad Heritage Museum. The museum displays an array of relics and items that date back to the Stone Ages and represent the heritage of Wayanad's tribal communities. You will find artefacts such as ancient weapons, tools and pottery, among other things. Visiting the museum is an excellent way to learn more about the history and culture of the region.
End your trip with a trek to the magnificent Chembra Peak. This peak is the highest point in Wayanad and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and valleys. Though the trek is moderately difficult, it is worth the effort to reach the heart-shaped lake located midway to the peak. The view from the top will leave you amazed, and you will feel like you are on top of the world.
If you have more time, you can add the Banasura Sagar Dam and the Thirunelli Temple to your itinerary. However, if you have less time, you can skip either the Edakkal Caves or the Wayanad Heritage Museum. Keep in mind that the caves are closed on Mondays and the Peak trek is closed during monsoon season (June to September).
