2-Day Itinerary for Bhubaneswar

  1. Day 1: Lingaraj Temple Complex

    The Lingaraj Temple Complex is one of the most famous and largest temples in Bhubaneswar. Spread over a vast area, the complex consists of several shrines, with the main temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The architecture of the temple is a fine example of the Kalinga style of architecture.     Located on two adjacent hills, Khandagiri and Udayagiri Caves are ancient rock-cut cave monuments that date back to the 2nd century BC. These caves are famous for their intricate carvings, inscriptions, and motifs. The Jain themes depicted in the caves offer a glimpse into the Jain religion and its influence in the region. Do not miss the Rani Gumpha (Queen's Cave) and Hathi Gumpha (Elephant Cave), which are the most famous of the 18 caves.

  3. Day 2: Dhauli Hill and Shanti Stupa

    Dhauli Hill is where Emperor Ashoka is believed to have renounced violence and embraced Buddhism after the Kalinga War. A massive stone edict of Ashoka's famous rock edicts can be found at the base of the hill. Atop the hill is the Shanti Stupa, a pristine white structure that offers stunning views of the city and surrounding areas. The stupa also houses several frescoes and sculptures of Buddha. The serene environment of the hill and the stupa make it an ideal location for meditation and introspection.

  4. Day 2: Odisha State Museum
    20 minutes (7 km) from Dhauli Hill and Shanti Stupa

    The Odisha State Museum is the perfect place to explore the art, culture, and history of Odisha. The museum houses a vast collection of archaeological artifacts, religious sculptures, coins, manuscripts, and paintings. Some of the highlights of the museum include the Hathigumpha Inscription, Buddhist and Jain sculptures, and traditional textiles and handicrafts. The museum also has a section dedicated to the tribal artifacts and culture of Odisha.

If you have less time, you can visit only the Lingaraj Temple Complex or choose between Khandagiri and Udayagiri Caves and the Odisha State Museum. Make sure to carry comfortable walking shoes, sunblock, and plenty of water as most of these places involve a lot of walking and heat exposure.
