A Two-Day Itinerary for Wayanad

  1. Day 1: Edakkal Caves
    30 minutes (12 kilometres) from Kalpetta

    The Edakkal Caves are two natural caves located on top of a remote hill. These caves are famous for their pre-historic inscriptions and carvings, dating back to around 6,000 BC. Visiting the caves is a unique experience as it requires a 45-minute trek up the hill. The trek itself is enjoyable, with scenic views of the surrounding areas. Once at the caves, you can explore and learn about the history etched inside.

  2. Day 1: Meenmutty Waterfalls
    30 minutes (10 kilometres) from Edakkal Caves

    The Meenmutty Waterfalls is a three-tiered waterfall located in the heart of the jungle. The falls offer a delightful experience for nature enthusiasts and is a great place to get some stunning photos. However, it's important to take into consideration that the trek to the falls might be a bit tricky. There is a 2km uphill hike from the parking area, a 1km steep descent and a 1km trek through the river. The ample experience that this place has to offer makes it a must-visit on your itinerary.

  3. Day 2: Banasura Sagar Dam
    50 minutes (25 kilometres) from Kalpetta

    The Banasura Sagar Dam is one of the largest earthen dams in India. This place is breathtakingly gorgeous and the scenic beauty it offers is absolutely mesmerising. It is adorned with picturesque flowers and lush green mountains around it, and the dam has its own garden which is a great place to relax. You can go boating in the dam, but ensure that you check with locals for best time to go.

  4. Day 2: Pookode Lake
    30 minutes (14 kilometres) from Banasura Sagar Dam

    The Pookode Lake is one of the biggest and most beautiful freshwater lakes in Wayanad. This lake is a serene, peaceful and picturesque destination set amidst the scenic mountainous plateau. One can enjoy a relaxed boating experience, conduct a picnic, and even enjoy the adventure activities nearby. The place also has beautiful walking trails, making it an ideal spot for hikers.

Useful Tips

If you have more time, you could add Chembra Peak to your itinerary. This peak is located around 21 kilometres from Kalpetta. It takes around 4-5 hours to trek to the top and back. Trekking early in the morning is recommended. Alternatively, you could visit other popular waterfalls in Wayanad like Soochippara, Kanthanpara, or Sentinel Rock.

If you have less time, you could skip some of the sites. The trek to the Edakkal Caves and Meenmutty Waterfalls are relatively long and challenging. Additionally, you could remove Pookode Lake from your itinerary.
