Start the trip with a relaxed beach day. Varkala Beach is a clean, golden sand beach, and the surrounding cliffside has numerous restaurants and shops built into it so you can easily grab food, drinks and souvenirs. If you are feeling adventurous, surfing or parasailing are also popular activities here.
Visit the famous Papanasam Beach, known for its religious significance and the natural springs that surround it. Take a dip in the waters that are said to have rejuvenating and cleansing properties. Next, head to the Janardana Swamy Temple, dating back to the 12th century, for a glimpse into the traditional temple practices of this area.
Kappil Lake is a serene backwater spot surrounded by coconut trees and paddy fields. You can take a boat ride here or just stroll along the banks and take in the scenery. Next, visit Ponnumthuruth Island, a beautiful, uninhabited island that you can reach by boat from the mainland. The island has a serene atmosphere and makes for a great photo-op.
If you have more time, visit the Anjengo Fort, a historic fort that is now a protected monument. If you have less time, skip the boat ride to Ponnumthuruth Island and just spend more time at the other locations. Don't forget to pack sunscreen and comfortable shoes as there is a fair amount of walking involved.
