Varkala beach is known for its pristine shores and lush greenery. The cliffs overlooking the sea are lined with bars and restaurants offering refreshing drinks and local delicacies. Visitors can also indulge in water sports like surfing and parasailing during the hours when lifeguards are on duty. The water is clear and ideal for swimming, but do heed warning signs, as rip tides can be strong. The beach is also known for its beautiful sunsets.
Jatayu Earth Centre is a unique eco-tourism destination named after the mythical bird Jatayu from the Hindu epic Ramayana. The main attraction is the world's largest bird sculpture (200 feet long, 150 feet wide, and 70 feet tall). Visitors can access the bird's wings, talons, and head for breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. There is also a state-of-the-art theatre, a 6D theatre, and several adventure activities, including ziplining, paintball, and rock climbing.
If you have more time, consider visiting the Sivagiri Mutt, a pilgrimage site dedicated to the Indian philosopher and social reformer, Sree Narayana Guru. The temple is located at the top of a hill and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. If you have less time, skip Jatayu Earth Centre and visit Anjengo Fort instead, a historical site that served as the first trade settlement of the British East India Company in Kerala.
