Edakkal Caves are two natural caves located 1,200 meters above sea level. These caves are famous for their prehistoric rock carvings, which are more than 8,000 years old. To reach the caves, you need to trek through Ambukuthi Hills and enjoy the lush greenery and scenic beauty of the region. The trek is moderately difficult, and it takes around 2 hours to reach the caves.
Banasura Sagar Dam is the largest earthen dam in India and the second-largest in Asia. It is an ideal place to enjoy the natural beauty of Wayanad and indulge in various water activities. You can also enjoy a speedboat ride, pedal boating, and trek to the nearby hills to get panoramic views of the dam and surrounding regions.
The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a diverse range of exotic animals, including elephants, tigers, leopards, deer, and langurs. You can enjoy a 3-hour jeep safari and spot some amazing wildlife and scenic beauty of the region. Apart from that, you can also visit the Tholpetty or Muthanga wildlife sanctuaries depending on which one is open.
Pookode Lake is a beautiful freshwater lake surrounded by evergreen forests and rolling hills. The lake is famous for its paddle boating, which allows you to enjoy the serene beauty of the lake and its surroundings. You can also visit the nearby aquarium, children's park, and shopping centers.
If you have more time, you can also visit the Soochipara Falls, Chembra Peak, or Thirunelli Temple. If you have less time, you can skip Pookode Lake and do a half-day tour of Edakkal Caves and Banasura Sagar Dam together. The best time to visit Wayanad is from October to May, and it is advisable to carry comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and insect repellent.
