Begin your trip with a challenging trek to the Chembra Peak, one of the highest peaks in Wayanad offering stunning views of the surroundings. The trek involves a steep climb followed by a heart-shaped lake halfway to the peak. The forest department allows a maximum of 200 people per day and the trek requires a guide. So, make sure to arrive early and secure your permits.
Head to the tranquil and serene Kuruva Island, a group of small islands located on the banks of the Kabini river. Enjoy a calm walk through the dense forest cover or indulge in fun activities such as river rafting or zip-lining. The island serves as an ideal picnic spot with its picturesque landscape and glistening waters.
Visit the Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earthen dam in India. Take a boating ride down the quaint waters or enjoy a nature walk around the dam. The lush green surrounding forests of the dam offer various trekking options and during monsoon, the dam overflows creating a spectacular sight.
End your trip with a visit to the Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary, home to various endangered species such as the tiger, elephant, and leopard. Enjoy a jeep safari through the dense forests or take a trek with a forest guide and indulge in bird watching. The sanctuary is only open from 7 am to 10 am and 3 pm to 5 pm, so plan your visit accordingly.
If you have more time, you can also visit the Edakkal Caves or the Soochipara Falls. For those who have less time, we suggest skipping the Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary and instead visiting the Pookode Lake or the Meenmutty Falls. Don't forget to pack comfortable trekking shoes, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Lastly, the peak season is from October to May, so plan your trip accordingly to avoid crowds.
