Start your day by visiting the Jagannath Temple, which is a historical and spiritual center in Puri. You can witness the morning rituals and ceremonies, which make it a unique experience. The temple architecture and its religious significance are worth marveling at. The temple complex is surrounded by markets selling souvenirs, sweets, snacks, and clothing. Be aware of the monkeys around the temple, they often grab food or things that interest them. Photography is not allowed within temple premises. You can rent a guide, but beware of frauds.
After visiting the temple, head over to the Chilika Lake, which is Asia's largest lagoon spread over 1100 sq. km. It's a popular destination for birdwatching, boating, aquatic sports, and discovering sea-life. You can visit the boating club and take a catamaran or motorboat ride to explore the lake. Don't miss the Irrawaddy Dolphins near Satapada, an integral part of the lake's ecosystem. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes, and carry sunscreen and a hat as it can get hot out on the boat.
Your second day starts with a visit to the Puri Beach, which is one of the famous beaches on the eastern coastline. Enjoy the sunrise and sunset, take a dip in the water, build sand sculptures, and indulge in water sports. Try out the delicious street food and fresh seafood while enjoying the beach view. Be aware of the high tides and rip currents, especially during monsoons. Avoid visiting during weekends or holidays, as it can get crowded and noisy.
After the beach visit, make your way to the Gundicha Temple, which is a significant temple for Hindus and is devoted to Lord Jagannath. It's a beautiful temple complex surrounded by lush green gardens and serene landscape. The temple hosts Rath Yatra (chariot festival) in June/July, which attracts millions of visitors from all over the world. Photography is allowed, but you must wear decent clothing inside the temple complex. Check the temple timings, as it's closed during afternoon and evening hours.
If you have more time, you can visit the Sun Temple in Konark or Odisha State Museum. If you have less time, you can skip visiting Chilika Lake and explore the local markets instead. The famous markets include Pipli Applique Village, Raghurajpur Heritage Village, and Sudarshan Art and Craft Village. Beware of frauds and overly-priced vendors.
