Start your Wayanad explorations with a visit to the Edakkal Caves, a prehistoric site that has drawings and carvings dating back to 6000 BCE. The caves can be reached after a 1-kilometer trek through scenic surroundings. When inside, one can observe drawings of human figures, animals and other interesting patterns.
After appreciating the cave art at Edakkal, head over to the Soochipara Falls, a three-tiered waterfall set amid lush greenery. Admire the falls and take a dip in the cool waters of its natural pool. The waterfall is best enjoyed during the monsoon season.
End the day with a visit to the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, where you can see elephants, tigers, panthers, and various bird species in their natural habitat. Enjoy a jeep safari through the sanctuary, and keep your camera ready to capture some memorable photos of the wildlife.
Embark on day two of your tour with a visit to the Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earthen dam in India, located amidst the picturesque Banasura hills. The dam offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, as well as exciting activities such as speed boating, kayaking, and trekking.
Next, head to the Pookode Lake, a natural freshwater lake located amidst evergreen forests and hills. Take a walk around the lake and enjoy the serene ambiance. You can also opt for a pedal boat ride on the lake.
Finish your tour with a trek to the Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanad. The trek to the peak takes around 3-4 hours, and the view from the top is breathtaking. You can also catch a glimpse of the heart-shaped lake, nestled atop the peak.
If you have more time, consider visiting the Nagarhole National Park or the Kuruvadweep island. If you have less time, you can skip Soochipara Falls and plan an early start for your trek to Chembra Peak. Make sure to carry sufficient water and snacks for the trek. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes since the terrain is rough. Keep in mind that some locations have ticket counters that close before the site itself, so plan accordingly.
