Start your Wayanad journey by exploring the magnificent Edakkal Caves, which are a natural wonder formed over millions of years. The caves are located on the Ambukuthi Mala hill and it is believed that the caves contain carvings dating back to 6000 BC. A moderately challenging trek of 30 minutes will take you to the top of the hill and through the cave entrance. The cave boasts a magnificent view of the surrounding hills and valleys. Due to the heavy rush, the cave visits are limited to 2 hours, and prior booking is suggested. The cave is open from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.
After a thrilling experience at Edakkal Caves, take a refreshing break at Pookode Lake, located at the center of Wayanad. The tranquil blue-green lake is surrounded by lush green forests and hills. Take a stroll down the nature trail around the lake, or enjoy a peaceful boat ride. The lake aquarium is a popular attraction for showcasing various species of fish. The lake is open from 9 am to 5 pm.
Start your second day with a trek to the highest peak in Wayand, Chembra Peak. The trek is arduous, and distance is 14 km round trip. The path leads through dense forest, cascading waterfalls, and magnificent grasslands. The trail requires a minimum of 5 hours hike through well-defined zigzag pathways to reach the top. The peak offers a stunning view of Wayanad Hill, including nearby hills and valleys. Pre-booking is suggested, and entry is limited to day-time hours.
Conclude your journey by soaking in the beautiful ambience of the Soochipara falls. The waterfalls from a height of 656 feet, and are a perfect weekend getaway location. The falls feature three-step waterfalls, surrounded by lush green forest and a picturesque pool you can swim in. Trek down to the falls to witness the scenic beauty of the place. The entry fee is INR 80 per head. The falls are open from 8 am to 5 pm.
If you have more time, you can add a visit to Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, Banasura Sagar Dam, or the Wayanad Heritage Museum. If you have less time, you can skip Pookode lake, or Soochipara falls, or some parts of the trek. Beware of the monkeys on your treks, and carry refreshments and comfortable shoes accordingly.
