Begin your journey by heading to the Edakkal Caves, a network of caverns boasting ancient rock art and scenic views. It's a 30-minute drive from your starting point, Kalpetta. The cave paintings date back to the Neolithic era and offer a unique insight into early human history. However, the climb to the caves can be steep, so wear comfortable shoes and carry water. Advanced booking is required at the moment due to COVID-19 restrictions, so make sure to check the opening hours in advance.
Next on your list is the Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanad. The trek to the peak takes about three hours and is a moderate level hike. You'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the gorgeous landscape. The entry to the trekking trail closes at 1 pm, so make sure to begin your trek early in the morning. It's always advisable to carry sunscreen, insect repellent, and water.
Begin day 2 visiting the Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earthen dam in India and the second-largest in Asia. The dam is surrounded by lush green hills offering fantastic views of the lake. You can opt for various water sports, including boating, kayaking, and speed boating (if available). The dam opens at 9:00 am, so plan accordingly.
Finally, head to the Thirunelli Temple, an ancient temple nestled in the Brahmagiri hills. The temple dates back to over 3000 years and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple architecture is mesmerizing, and the location is serene. Make sure to check the dress code and the restrictions before your visit. The temple opens at 5:30 am and closes at 12:00 pm.
You can add the Meenmutty waterfalls to your itinerary if you have extra time. The waterfall is a 3 km trek from the parking lot and requires a moderate level of fitness. If you have less time, you can skip the Chembra peak trek. Carry cash with you as most places in Wayanad accept only cash. Wayanad is known for leeches, so wear leech socks during monsoons or rainy seasons.
