Start your day with a refreshing walk along the Promenade Beach, one of the most popular attractions in Pondicherry. Take in the view of the Bay of Bengal and admire the impressive French architecture on one side while the sea breeze caresses your skin. You can grab some breakfast from the nearby street vendors selling fresh fruits, steaming idlis, and crispy dosas. From the beach, you can visit the French War Memorial, a beautiful monument dedicated to the French soldiers who lost their lives during World War I.
Next, immerse yourself in the peaceful ambience of Sri Aurobindo Ashram, a spiritual community founded in 1926 by Sri Aurobindo and his disciple, The Mother. Explore the beautifully landscaped gardens, shop for handcrafted items and books at the onsite boutiques, and learn more about the teachings of Aurobindo and The Mother at the ashram's visitors' center. After lunch, take a short drive to visit the Matrimandir, a golden globe-shaped structure that serves as the meditation center of the Auroville community. Walk through the tranquil gardens, listen to the serene music, and take a tour of the inner chamber of the Matrimandir. Note that visitors must book in advance and adhere to the dress code and decorum guidelines.
Begin your second day with a visit to the Auroville, an experimental international township that advocates sustainable and eco-friendly living. The focal point of Auroville is the Matri Mandir, a large golden sphere surrounded by twelve gardens. Take a guided tour of the town to learn about its history, philosophy and achievements. You can also browse the various boutiques, eateries and organic-farm outlets for an enriching experience.
In the afternoon, head straight to the Chunnambar Boat House, a paradise for water sports enthusiasts. Rent a kayak, paddle-boat or motorboat to explore the backwaters of Pondicherry, have a bubbly bath, or relax on the serene beach. You can also relish some fresh seafood at the onsite restaurant. Do note that boating closes at 5 pm and that you need to wear a life jacket before boarding a boat.
If you have more time, consider visiting the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, one of the oldest churches in Pondicherry, and the Bharathi Park, a sprawling garden in the center of the city. For less time, exclude Chunnambar Boat House and spend more time exploring Pondicherry's narrow streets to see the beautiful shops selling essential oils, perfumes, and textiles.
