Three Days in Ujjain, May 2023

  1. Day 1: Mahakaleshwar Temple
20 minutes (3.5 km) from Ujjain Junction Railway Station

Begin your Ujjain itinerary at the Mahakaleshwar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India. This 8th-century temple is famous for its mesmerizing architecture, especially the silver-plated door with stunning carvings. The temple's main attraction is the "Bhasma Aarti" performed every morning at 4:00 a.m., a ritual where Lord Shiva is worshipped with ashes.

  2. Day 1: Ram Ghat
10 minutes (1.8 km) from Mahakaleshwar Temple

Next, head to Ram Ghat, the holy place situated on the banks of the river Kshipra. It is one of the oldest ghats in India, where devotees take holy dips and perform rituals. At sunset, the ghat comes alive with the evening "aarti," a spectacular sight of floating diyas, fragrance of flowers, and melodious hymns.

  3. Day 2: Kal Bhairav Temple
15 minutes (2.5 km) from Ram Ghat

The Kal Bhairav Temple is one of the most famous temples in Ujjain and is dedicated to Lord Bhairav, a fierce form of Lord Shiva. The temple's architecture is spectacular, and you can see dogs being worshipped inside, symbolizing the vehicle of Lord Bhairav. You can also try the famous "Bhairav Ladoo" sold outside the temple.

  4. Day 2: Kaliadeh Palace
25 minutes (7.6 km) from Kal Bhairav Temple

Make your next stop at the Kaliadeh Palace, situated on a small island of the Shipra river. It is believed that Lord Krishna and his friends used to play in this palace. The palace's architecture is magnificent, with a blend of Hindu and Muslim styles. You can also enjoy a boat ride on the Shipra river and relish local snacks sold outside the palace.
