The Forest Research Institute is a premier institution of its kind and one of the oldest in India. It has an extensive collection of rare plants, herbs and a botanical museum. Visitors can take a guided tour of the museum and gardens. Considered a national heritage site, it boasts of stunning colonial architecture and art.
Malsi Deer Park, also known as Dehradun Zoo, harbours various rare species of deer, birds and other animals in its natural habitat. There is also a small museum highlighting the wildlife of the region. After that, head over to Robber's Cave, where the river flows through a narrow gorge, and rocks form caves that make for a popular picnic spot.
Start by visiting the Mindrolling Monastery, one of the largest Tibetan Buddhist centres in India. You can explore the grounds, participate in meditation sessions or simply learn about the history of the monastery. After that, visit Sahastradhara, a natural spring that is rich in sulphur and has therapeutic properties. You can soak in the pools or take a cable car ride to the top for panoramic views of the valley.
Start the day at Tapkeshwar Temple, a popular shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is situated in a cave-like formation next to a natural spring, and the beautiful surroundings make it a peaceful spot. Later, head to Rajaji National Park, a famous tiger reserve home to numerous endangered species. Take a jeep safari and spot wild elephants, tigers, bears and a variety of birds.
If you have an extra day, consider visiting the nearby hill station of Mussoorie or the holy city of Haridwar. If you have less time, you can skip Mindrolling Monastery/Sahastradhara and Tapkeshwar Temple/Rajaji National Park. Additionally, carry comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen and insect repellent for outdoor activities.
