Begin your adventure with a trek to the highest peak in Wayanad, Chembra Peak. It's a 2-hour trek to the top, but the stunning view of the heart-shaped lake from the summit is worth the effort. Make sure to get prior permission from the Meppadi Forest Range Office, as it is mandatory for visitors to trek the peak. Carrying food and water is a must. After descending, head to the nearby Pookode Lake for some water-based fun and paddle boating.
On the second day, head to the pristine Kuruva Island, an uninhabited delta on the Kabini River. Surrounded by lush greenery and rocky outcrops, the island is perfect for those wanting to explore and bask in the serenity of nature. Visitors can take a dip in the river or go for a bamboo rafting tour. The island is open from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm, and prior booking is mandatory as only 200 visitors are allowed per day. After your island adventure, head to the Banasura Sagar Dam.
End your adventure with a visit to the largest earthen dam in India, Banasura Sagar Dam. Surrounded by scenic hills and lush greenery, the dam offers a splendid view of the surrounding areas. Visitors can also take a speedboat ride or try ziplining, kayaking and trekking in the nearby hills. The dam is open from 9 am to 5 pm. After finishing your day at Banasura Sagar Dam, return to Kalpetta.
If you have more time, consider adding the Edakkal Caves, Soochipara Falls or exploring the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary. If you have less time, you can skip Pookode Lake or plan a half-day trip to Kuruva Island. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, stay hydrated, carry food and snacks. Avoid littering and follow the guidelines given for each destination.
