4-Day Maharashtra Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Mumbai
    Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus
    10 minutes (3.5 km) from Gateway of India

    Start the day at Mumbai's most iconic landmark, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus train station. This Victorian-Gothic style building showcases India's colonial past and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. After exploring the station, take a short walk to the Gateway of India, a majestic arch facing the Arabian Sea. From here, take a ferry to Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The caves are famous for their ancient rock-cut temples and sculptures of Hindu gods and goddesses. End the day with Mumbai's street food and bazaars at Colaba Causeway market.

    Pandavleni Caves

    Discover the ancient Buddhist caves at Pandavleni. These rock-cut caves were built between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BCE, which also makes them some of the oldest in India. Next, visit the Sita Gufaa located in Panchavati in Nashik. This cave is believed to have been the place where Sita, the wife of Lord Rama, stayed when she was abducted. Later in the day, explore the vineyards and wineries around Nashik. Sula Vineyards, one of the most popular wineries, offers wine tasting and tours.

  3. Day 3: Pune
    Shaniwar Wada
    20 minutes (8.4 km) from Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple

    Begin the day with a visit to the Shaniwar Wada, a palace fort that served as the seat of the Peshwa rulers of the Maratha Empire. The palace was built in the 18th century and is now a popular tourist attraction. Then, head to the Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple, one of the most famous temples in Pune. The temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha and is particularly beautiful during the festivities of Ganesh Chaturthi. End the day with a visit to the Aga Khan Palace, a historical palace that witnessed some of India's most important events during the freedom struggle.

  4. Day 4: Aurangabad
    Ajanta Caves
    2 hours 10 minutes (100 km) from Ellora Caves

    Travel to the Ajanta Caves, UNESCO World Heritage site known for their exquisite paintings and sculptures dating back to the 2nd century BCE. These caves reflect the influence of Buddhism on Indian art and culture and are considered a masterpiece of Indian art. Later, explore the Ellora Caves, another UNESCO World Heritage site known for its remarkable rock-cut temples, sculptures, and monasteries. These caves also showcase the harmony between Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism that existed in ancient India.
