Burundi Adventure Itinerary (June 2023)

  1. Day 1: Rusizi National Park
    30 minutes drive (15.6 miles) from Bujumbura

    Explore the biodiversity and witness the rare fauna in one of the oldest national parks in Africa. Take a river safari on Rusizi river and spot hippopotamuses, crocodiles and over 100 bird species. End the day with a hike to the top of Rukoko hill and witness the breathtaking sunset.

  2. Day 2: Coffee Plantations and Karera Waterfall
    2 hours drive (86.5 miles) from Rusizi National Park

    Embark on an adventurous journey to the coffee plantations of Kayanza province. You will learn about the coffee beans journey from plant to cup. After lunch, hike a scenic trail to the stunning Karera Waterfall. With a height of 60 meters, you can swim at the base of the falls or enjoy the rainbow view from the top.

  3. Day 3: Bururi Forest Nature Reserve
    3 hours drive (96.4 miles) from Karera Waterfall

    Take a guided walking safari in one of Burundi's protected forests, home to a variety of primates, birdlife and flora species, including an endemic species of flying squirrel. Enjoy a picnic lunch by the river Nyakazu. In the afternoon, take a short drive to Gitega and visit the National Museum of Gitega where you'll be introduced to Burundi's rich history.

Useful tips

If you have an extra day, visit the Saga Beach on the shores of Lake Tanganyika and explore the culture and traditions of the local fishermen. If you have less time, remove the National Museum of Gitega. Make sure to bring comfortable walking shoes and clothes for hiking and walking in the forest reserves. Don't forget insect repellent and sunscreen. Remember to carry enough cash because some places do not accept credit or debit cards.
