Explore the prehistoric rock carvings at Edakkal Caves, which date back to over 8,000 years ago. Located on top of Ambukuthi mala near Ambalavayal town, these caves are accessible via a short trek. You can also enjoy the scenic views of the Western Ghats en-route. The trek may be a little challenging for some, but the experience and the views are worth it. In June 2023, make sure to bring extra precautions and water as the weather is going to be hot and humid.
Located near Padinjarathara, Banasura Sagar Dam is the largest earthen dam in India and offers scenic views of the surrounding mountains and forests. You can go on a boating ride here, but make sure to check the weather as boating may get discontinued in case of heavy rain or strong winds. You can also take a scenic hike around the dam and enjoy the picturesque scenery. The place gets crowded, so try to visit earlier in the day.
Spread across an area of 344 sq. km, this wildlife sanctuary is home to a plethora of fauna and flora, including elephants, tigers, leopards, and bats. You can go on a jungle safari or take a guided tour of the sanctuary. There are also elephant safaris available for a closer look at the animals. In June 2023, keep in mind the wildlife sanctuary closes earlier than usual at 3:30 pm, so try to start the day early.
A freshwater lake surrounded by lush green hills, Pookode Lake is a great place for a family picnic or a scenic boat ride. The lake is about 40 meters deep, and you can find different species of freshwater fishes here. You can also go on a short nature walk around the lake and enjoy the serene surroundings. It is a good place to relax after a long day of activities, but keep in mind that the place closes earlier around 5 pm, so plan accordingly.
If you have more time, consider visiting additional attractions such as Soochipara Waterfalls, Thusharagiri Waterfalls, and Chembra Peak. If you have less time, you can skip the Banasura Sagar Dam and head directly to the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. Make sure to bring mosquito repellent, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes for the treks.
