Start your morning early with a trek to the Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanad. The trek takes around 3-4 hours to the heart-shaped lake at the peak, providing a stunning view of the entire valley. The lush green forest and tea plantations on the way offer a scenic trail, and the peak has chilly weather even in June.
In the afternoon, visit the Edakkal Caves, famous for their ancient rock carvings. The trekking to the caves itself is an adventure in the rocky Ambukuthi Hills, which takes around 45 minutes. These caves are known for their two natural rock crevices, which according to archaeologists, date back to the neolithic age around 8,000 years ago. The carvings disclose a variety of symbols, figures, and scripts, and it is an incredible sight to witness.
Finish your day with a visit to the Kuruva Island, a river delta consisting of a cluster of islets. It is a lush evergreen forest, home to some of the endangered flora and fauna species. Being an uninhabited area, it is considered the perfect place for nature walks, birdwatching, and more. With the sprawling bamboo groves, tall trees, and streams, it is an immensely peaceful place to unwind. The island is closed during the monsoon season in June and July.
Start your day by visiting the Banasura Sagar Dam, which is the second-largest earth dam in Asia. This dam has a vast expanse of crystal clear blue water and looks beautiful amidst the mountain ranges surrounding it. It is an ideal place to enjoy boating, and the speedboats and pedal boats are readily available at the spot. The views around the reservoir are mesmerizing and tranquil, providing an off-beat experience.
In the afternoon, visit the Soochipara Falls, known as the 'Sentinel Rock Waterfalls'. The drive towards the waterfall, in itself, is enthralling, especially when passing through the lush green tea estates and coffee plantations. The 200-meter scenic trek down to the falls from the parking lot is a true adventure. For adventure enthusiasts, there are more than one level of waterfalls here which provide opportunities for water rappelling and rock climbing. This place is closed during the monsoon season in June and July.
If you have more time, add a visit to the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, which offers an unforgettable Jeep Safari. You can also visit the Pookode Lake, a fresh-water lake surrounded by lush green forests, and the Lakkidi Viewpoint, known for its stunning scenes of the Western Ghats. If you have less time, we suggest skipping Kuruva Island and Edakkal Caves and visiting the Phantom Rock in Ambalavayal or the Meenmutty Waterfalls. Additionally, wear comfortable shoes and carry a water bottle as the area is hilly, and there could be a lot of walking and trekking.
