Three-Day Cultural Immersion Itinerary in Tunis: May 2023
Day 1: Medina Quarter
Morning: Start your day in the heart of Tunis, at the entrance to the Medina Quarter. The ancient city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Spend your morning navigating through the narrow alleyways, discovering the stunning architecture, and experiencing local life. Do not miss the Great Mosque of Tunis, Sidi Youssef Dey Mosque, and Zaitouna Mosque.
Afternoon: Head towards Dar Ben Abdallah Museum, previously a palace and now converted into the museum, famous for showcasing Tunisian traditional costumes, jewellery, ceramics, and furniture. Move forward towards Souk Ech-Chaouachine or The Blacksmiths' Souk, the perfect place for grabbing souvenirs or traditional Tunisian metal home decor and stop by for a local meal in one of the traditional restaurants situated in the souk.
Evening: Complete the day by attending a performance at the Théâtre Municipal de Tunis, a magnificent theatre dating back to 1902 and even hosting previous performances by the famous artist, Enrico Caruso.
Day 2: Le Bardo Museum and Sidi Bou Said
Morning: Begin your day by visiting Le Bardo Museum, located in the suburbs of Tunis. The museum hosts a wide range of Roman mosaics from different regions of Tunisia, Carthage Statuary, and many other archaeological treasures. This will give you a glimpse of the historic impact on Tunisia and its connection with ancient Rome.
Afternoon: Continue your day by heading towards the picturesque village of Sidi Bou Said. It is located on top of a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Walk through the stunning narrow streets. Enjoy the beautiful blue and white architecture of buildings around while taking a coffee break, then move towards the popular art galleries, such as the Gallery Selma Feriani and Dar el Annabi art galleries, in search of Tunisian masterpieces.
Evening: Finish your day at a local restaurant in Sidi Bou Said, enjoying delicious Mediterranean cuisine while admiring the beautiful village view at night.
Day 3: Carthage and Goulette
Morning: Begin your day by visiting the ancient town of Carthage. You may take a self-guided tour or hire a local guide to learn the town's rich history where currently only the remnants of the city remain, such as the Byrsa Hill, Antonine Baths, and Punic Ports.
Afternoon: For the afternoon, visit La Goulette, a unique location with a lively atmosphere bursting with different cultures. Take a stroll through the popular street, Rue Franklin Roosevelt or take a photo in front of the ancient Kasbah, which dates back to the 14th century.
Evening: Conclude your day by having dinner at one of the French and Tunisian restaurants present in the area, providing dishes made with locally sourced ingredients.
