Get ready to be awestruck by Munnar’s panoramic view of green tea plantations sprawling over rolling hills. Start by visiting the Mattupetty Dam, an excellent picnic spot with its serene lake amidst verdant hills. Top Station is a must-visit, with breathtaking views of the neighboring Tamil Nadu state. Horseback riding, painting portraits, and tasting delicious local delicacies are all available here. End the day with a visit to the Eravikulam National Park and see the endangered Nilgiri Tahr.
Day 2 is all about embracing the spices, wildlife, and adventure in Thekkady. Begin at Periyar National Park, Kerala’s largest wildlife sanctuary that's home to tigers, sambar deer and Indian elephants. The highlight is a boat tour through the Periyar lake where you can witness animals drinking and bathing from the banks. A visit to the Elephant Junction is next to go on a guided tour, watch and even bathe with the majestic elephants in a river. Follow it up by visiting the Spice Plantation to savor the fragrance and flavors of India’s exotic spices.
If you have more time, consider visiting Alleppey, known for its serene backwaters. A must-do activity here is taking a houseboat ride with friends. By contrast, if you have less time, skip Thekkady and instead visit Vagamon, a serene hill station that offers excellent trekking and paragliding opportunities. Don’t forget to pack sunscreen, comfortable shoes, and mosquito repellent when venturing into Kerala’s forest areas. Remember to check with the tourism department if you need any permits or reservations ahead of time.
