Start your adventure at Kaza, the largest town in Spiti Valley, situated at an altitude of 12,500 ft. Spend the day exploring its mixed culture and architecture displaying Buddhist and Hindu influences. Visit the Ki Monastery, one of the oldest and largest of its kind, perched atop a hill like a formidable fortress. Its walls house rare artefacts and original scrolls, and you can catch a glimpse of the resident Lamas' daily rituals. Next, travel to the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary, about 19 km northeast of Kaza, where you can spot rare animals like the Snow Leopard, Ibex, and Himalayan Wolf.
Begin your day with an early drive to the Chandratal Lake, also known as the Moon Lake, surrounded by snow-capped peaks that will leave you speechless. The lake is situated at an altitude of 14,100ft is located between the Chandra Bhaga and Kunzum mountain ranges. Spend the day walking around the lake, appreciating the beauty of the region, and camping overnight amidst the scenic surroundings.
Head to the Tabo Monastery, also known as the "Ajanta of the Himalayas," situated at an altitude of 10,010 ft. The oldest continuously functional monastery is a treasure trove of ancient murals, statues, and frescoes that highlight the rich history of the area. Next, drive to Keylong, a charming town in Lahaul and Spiti Valley situated on the banks of Bhaga River. Its unique geography is reinforced by its cultural heritage and the warmth of its people. You can visit the ancient Kardang Monastery and enjoy some of the delicious local cuisine.
If you have more time, add a visit to Hikkim, the highest post office in the world, and Langza village, known for its fossil finds. For those with less time, skip the Keylong and Tabo Monastery visit. Be sure to carry warm clothes, jackets, and a good pair of hiking shoes as most places require a trek. The temperature drops rapidly after the sun sets, so carry along warm clothes for the night camping at Chandratal Lake. June is peak season in Spiti Valley, so plan ahead and book your accommodation well in advance.
