3-Day Family-Friendly Itinerary for Wayanad in May 2023

  1. Day 1: Edakkal Caves
    30 minutes (12.6 km) from Kalpetta

    Explore one of the oldest human settlements in India, the Edakkal Caves, situated 1200m above sea level on the Ambukutty Mala hill. The caves have important petroglyphs from the Neolithic era representing various human and animal figures, some dating back to 6000 BCE. The uphill trek through the lush forest will offer spectacular views of the Wayanad district. Around 45 min-1 hour is required to explore the caves and return to the base.

  2. Day 2: Banasura Sagar Dam and Speed Boating

    Visit India’s largest earthen dam, the Banasura Sagar Dam. Enjoy the breathtaking view of the majestic Banasura hills and the gorgeous surroundings of the dam's reservoir. Take a speed boat ride on the clear blue waters and revel in the serenity and tranquility of the beautiful dam. The ride can take up to 30 minutes, and the scenery and watersports available in the dam are perfect for a family outing.

    Explore the diversity of wildlife at one of the most well-known places in Wayanad, the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. Take a guided tour and spot different species of animals like elephants, tigers, Indian bison, and leopard. The sanctuary also boasts of various bird species for the birdwatchers. Being part of the Western Ghats and Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, the park offers exhilarating trekking and hiking routes.

Also, the ideal time to visit Wayanad is after monsoon, between October and May. Do not forget to carry sunscreen, hats, and comfortable shoes for the treks and hikes.
