Two Days in Malta: A Maltese Getaway

  • Day 1: Discover the Old Town of Valletta
20 minutes (6.7km) from Malta International Airport

The capital is known for its striking Baroque architecture, which has been recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage. Visit St. John’s Cathedral, the Grandmaster’s Palace, and the Upper Barrakka Gardens, offering panoramic views of the Grand Harbour. The streets are maze-like, so it's worth joining a guided tour to get a more in-depth insight into the city's rich history. Finish the day with a drink at one of the bars in Strait Street.

  • Day 2: Swim in the Blue Lagoon and visit Mdina
    1 hour (21.5km) from Valletta

A breathtaking crystal-clear sea and picturesque scenery await you in the Blue Lagoon, located on the island of Comino. Take a dip in the turquoise sea or go snorkeling to admire the colourful sea-life. Afterward, take a ferry to the 'Silent City' of Mdina, a fortified town that's still enclosed within its historical walls. Visit Palazzo Falson, St. Paul's Cathedral and 'The Game of Thrones' site. When it comes to lunch, try traditional 'pastizzi' from an authentic Maltese bakery.

Transportation

Public transport in Malta is relatively cheap and efficient, but it works better if you have more time to spare. The main bus station is located in Valletta, and buses can take you almost anywhere on the island. Malta is relatively small, so hiring a car or scooter also makes for a reasonable option, and you can explore more in less time. Taxi or private car hire charges around €20-30, depending on the distance.

Useful Tips

If you have more time, visit the three cities, Sliema & St. Julians, and the fishing village Marsaxlokk. For those interested in history and architecture, the Hypogeum in Paola, a unique underground temple, is a must-visit. Travelers who wish to relax on the beach can skip Mdina and explore the sandy coves of the north-eastern coast, namely Mellieha, Golden Bay and Gnejna Bay. Finally, for those interested in nightlife, visit Paceville, an area in St. Julian's that comes to life at night with clubs and bars.

Airports

Malta International Airport (MLA), also known as Valletta International Airport, is the only airport in the country, located 5km southwest of Valletta. The airport connects to many European cities and popular travel destinations worldwide via flight carriers such as Ryanair, EasyJet, and Lufthansa.
