Explore the UNESCO World Heritage site of Mahabalipuram, also known as Mamallapuram. Marvel at the historic Shore Temple, an ancient structure that still stands tall against the coastal winds. Take some time to admire the intricately carved Pancha Rathas, a set of five monolithic temples carved out of a single rock formation. Head to the Krishna's Butter Ball, a massive granite boulder that sits precariously on a slope. You can also try some local seafood at one of the many restaurants in the area.
Take a stroll along the Marina Beach, one of the longest natural beaches in the world. Visit the Kapaleeswarar Temple, a 7th-century temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Later, visit Fort St. George, the first English fortress in India. Walk through the history of the British East India Company while admiring the architecture of the fort. Don't forget to stop by the National Museum located inside the fort which houses artefacts from the British times.
Start your day with a refreshing swim at Covelong Beach, a secluded stretch of golden sand that attracts surfers and sunbathers alike. Next, head to DakshinaChitra, a living history museum where you can experience the sights and sounds of traditional South Indian life. The museum features exhibits such as a Chettinad-style mansion, recreated streetscapes, and a crafts bazaar where you can purchase local handicrafts. End your day with a yoga class, or a relaxing spa treatment at the Golden Beach Resort.
If you have more time, you can explore the nearby town of Pondicherry or take a day trip to the temple town of Kanchipuram. If you have less time, skip DakshinaChitra and spend more time in Mahabalipuram exploring other nearby temples like the Varaha Cave Temple or the Descent of the Ganges, a massive bas-relief sculpture carved on two giant rocks. Don't forget to carry sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes.
