Take a trip down memory lane at the Sabarmati Ashram, where Mahatma Gandhi lived from 1917 to 1930. The peaceful ashram displays the life and teachings of the Father of the Nation through pictures, manuscripts, and personal effects. Make sure to visit the Hriday Kunj, the humble dwelling where Gandhi lived with his wife. The ashram also has a library, a handicrafts center and a bookstore. You can spend an entire day here, strolling around the peaceful grounds. Entry is free, and the ashram is open from 8:30 am to 6:30 pm.
Take a break from the city's hustle-bustle at Kankaria Lake, a serene man-made lake built in the 15th century. The lake has a circular path for walking and jogging, a zoo and a toy train. You can also rent a paddleboat or enjoy the light and sound show in the evening. Make sure to try some local street food like sev puri and pav bhaji at the lakefront food court. Entry to the lake is free, but the attractions have separate entry fees. The lake is open from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm.
End your trip with a visit to the Adalaj Stepwell, a five-story stepwell built in 1499. The stepwell has intricate carvings of deities, flowers, and birds on its walls and pillars. The cool and quiet atmosphere of the stepwell is a welcome respite from the heat and noise of the city. You can also visit the adjacent temple and mosque. Entry to the stepwell is free, and it is open from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm.
You can add a visit to the nearby Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, famous for its carved stone windows called "jali" and the Calico Museum of Textiles, showcasing traditional Indian textiles. If you have less time, you can skip Kankaria Lake or Adalaj Stepwell, depending on your preference. Make sure to carry sunscreen, hats, and water bottles since May can be hot and humid in Ahmedabad. Also, be aware of pickpockets in crowded tourist spots.
