2-Day Family Friendly Itinerary in Jaisalmer in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Jaisalmer Fort
15 minutes (2.3 km) from Jaisalmer Railway Station

Start your first day in Jaisalmer by visiting the Jaisalmer Fort, also known as Sonar Quila. Built in the 12th century, this fort is one of the largest living forts in the world. You can roam around the narrow streets of the fort, visit the Jain Temples, and marvel at the intricate carvings on the walls and ceilings. Don't miss the Palace Museum, which houses a vast collection of artifacts from the royal family. Make sure to catch the sunset from one of the fort's bastions, where you can see the entire city bathed in golden light.

  2. Day 1: Gadisar Lake
10 minutes (1.2 km) from Jaisalmer Fort

After exploring the fort, head to the Gadisar Lake, a man-made lake that was once the primary source of water for the city. Take a boat ride and enjoy the peaceful surroundings or visit the Chhatriyan Ki Chhatri, a beautiful domed pavilion on the banks of the lake. You can also see a variety of migratory birds that flock to the lake during the winter months.

  3. Day 2: Desert Safari
30 minutes (40 km) from Jaisalmer city center

Jaisalmer is known for its vast expanses of sand dunes, so a desert safari is a must-do activity. You can choose from a variety of options, including camel safaris, jeep safaris, and dune bashing. Spend the day exploring the Thar Desert, watch the sunset over the dunes, and enjoy a traditional Rajasthani dinner under the stars. Don't forget to try your hand at desert camping for a truly authentic experience.

  4. Day 2: Kuldhara Village
1 hour (20 km) from the Thar Desert

On your way back from the desert, stop by the Kuldhara Village, an abandoned village that was once home to the Paliwal Brahmins. Legend has it that the villagers abandoned the village overnight to escape the wrath of the evil minister Salim Singh. The village has a haunting beauty to it, and you can explore the crumbling houses and temples that still stand today. There is also a small museum that showcases the history and culture of the village.
