Two-Day Itinerary for Wayandu in May 2023

  1. Day 1: Edakkal Caves
    30 minutes (10 miles) from Kalpetta

    The Edakkal Caves are a must-visit attraction in Wayanad for history buffs and adventure seekers. These caves are believed to have been formed by a huge boulder splitting into two, creating a fissure in the rock. You can find ancient carvings and inscriptions on the cave walls, some dating back to 5000 BC. A short trek through the Ambukuthi Hills will lead you to the entrance of the caves.

  2. Day 1: Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary
    40 minutes (18 miles) from Edakkal Caves

    The Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area and home to a variety of wildlife like elephants, deer, tigers, and leopards. The sanctuary is spread over an area of 345 sq km and offers a jungle safari where you can get a glimpse of the animals in their natural habitat. The best time to visit is early in the morning or late in the evening when the animals are most active.

  3. Day 2: Banasura Sagar Dam
    1 hour 20 minutes (34 miles) from Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary

    The Banasura Sagar Dam is the largest earth dam in India and is built across the Karamanathodu River. The dam offers a stunning view of the surrounding hills and is a popular spot for boating and picnicking. You can also trek to the nearby Banasura Hill for panoramic views of the dam and the surrounding landscape.

  4. Day 2: Pookode Lake
    30 minutes (12 miles) from Banasura Sagar Dam

    The Pookode Lake is a natural freshwater lake surrounded by lush green forests and hills. The lake is home to a variety of fish and is a popular spot for boating. You can also take a leisurely walk around the lake, and if you're lucky, you might spot some of the resident birds like the Malabar Grey Hornbill or the Crimson-backed Sunbird.
