Visit the Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Buddhists from around the world. It is believed to be the spot where Gautam Buddha attained enlightenment over 2,500 years ago. The temple complex features a 50m high pyramid-like temple, the Mahabodhi Tree, the Vajrasana or the Diamond Throne, and numerous other stupas and temples. Spend some time meditating and soaking in the tranquil atmosphere of the temple complex.
Start your day with a visit to the Great Buddha Statue, a towering 80-feet bronze statue of Buddha located at the Tergar Monastery complex. The statue is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens and water features, making it a peaceful and serene place for contemplation. Afterward, head to the nearby Thai Monastery which is known for its exquisite architecture and beautiful murals depicting the life of Buddha. The monastery also houses a large statue of Buddha in a meditation pose.
Spend your final day exploring the Dungeshwari Cave Temples and Barabar Caves. The Dungeshwari Cave Temples are a series of ancient rock-cut caves situated in the midst of picturesque hills. The caves are said to be the spot where Buddha meditated for six years before attaining enlightenment. Afterward, head to the nearby Barabar Caves, a group of ancient rock-cut caves dating back to the 3rd century BCE. These caves are believed to be some of the oldest surviving rock-cut caves in India and are renowned for their beautiful architecture and intricate carvings.
