4-Day Itinerary for Playa de Carmen

  • Day 1: Xcaret Park
    15 minutes (6.5 miles) from Playa de Carmen

    Xcaret Park is the perfect place to start off your trip to Playa de Carmen. This eco-archaeological park features an underground river, snorkeling, Mayan ruins, and a variety of flora and fauna. You can easily spend the entire day here and still not see everything the park has to offer.

  • Day 2: Chichen Itza
    2.5 hours (124 miles) from Playa de Carmen

    Chichen Itza is a must-see for anyone interested in Mayan history. This ancient city is home to the famous El Castillo pyramid, as well as other well-preserved ruins. It's a bit of a drive from Playa de Carmen, but well worth the trip.

  • Day 3: Cozumel
    30 minutes (12 miles) by ferry from Playa de Carmen

    Cozumel is a beautiful island located just off the coast of Playa de Carmen. Whether you want to relax on the beach or explore the island's coral reefs, there's something for everyone here. Be sure to check out the San Gervasio Mayan ruins while you're on the island.

  • Day 4: 5th Avenue
    10 minutes (0.5 miles) from Playa de Carmen

    5th Avenue is the main pedestrian street in Playa de Carmen, and it's the perfect place to end your trip. Shop for souvenirs and apparel, grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants, or simply people-watch while enjoying a cold drink.

Transportation

Useful Tips

If you have more time, consider adding a trip to Tulum or one of the many cenotes (natural swimming holes) in the area. If you have less time, consider skipping Chichen Itza or Cozumel and spend more time exploring Playa de Carmen.

The nearest airport to Playa de Carmen is Cancun International Airport (CUN), located about 35 miles north of the city. Taxis and shuttles are available for transportation to and from the airport, and car rentals are also available at the airport.
