4-Day Adventure Itinerary in Wayanadu for June 2023

  1. Day 1: Chembra Peak
25 minutes (9.3 km) from Kalpetta

Start your adventure in Wayanadu by hiking up the Chembra Peak, the highest peak in the region at 2,100 meters. The trek takes around 3-4 hours, but the panoramic view of the heart-shaped lake halfway up the peak is worth the effort. Make sure to carry enough water and snacks as there are no shops on the way. The trek is closed during the monsoon season in June due to safety concerns, so check ahead before planning your visit.

  2. Day 2: Edakkal Caves
35 minutes (14.2 km) from Chembra Peak

Explore the ancient Edakkal Caves, which are around 3,000 years old and contain carvings and inscriptions dating back to the Neolithic era. The cave is a natural formation created by a large split in a massive rock and requires a 1-kilometer hike uphill to reach. The caves are open from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, and it's recommended to arrive early to avoid crowds.

  3. Day 3: Banasura Sagar Dam
50 minutes (23.7 km) from Edakkal Caves

Visit the Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earthen dam in India and the second-largest in Asia. The dam offers a scenic view of the Banasura hills and the reservoir is perfect for boating, kayaking, and fishing. The dam is open from 9 am to 5 pm and boat rides are available until 3:30 pm.

  4. Day 4: Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary
1 hour and 20 minutes (42.3 km) from Banasura Sagar Dam

Experience Wayanadu's rich biodiversity by visiting the Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to several rare and endangered species such as tigers, leopards, elephants, and deer. The sanctuary is open from 7 am to 10 am and 3 pm to 5 pm. It's recommended to book a safari in advance and to reach the sanctuary early to avoid long queues.
