Three-Day Nature Itinerary in Idukki, June 2023

  1. Day 1: Ramakkalmedu
    1 hour 15 minutes (39.5 miles) from Cochin International Airport

    Start your trip to Idukki by visiting Ramakkalmedu, one of the most scenic hill stations in Kerala. Enjoy the breathtaking views of the Western Ghats and the Tamil Nadu plains from the top of the hill. Visit the Wind Farm, a major attraction in Ramakkalmedu, and watch the giant windmills in action. Take a leisurely walk through the spice plantations and learn about the cultivation of spices like cardamom, pepper and chilli. You can also visit the Kuruvan Kuruvathi rock formation, believed to be the footprints of a tribal couple from ancient times.

  2. Day 2: Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
    1 hour 30 minutes (36.5 miles) from Ramakkalmedu

    Explore the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, a protected area in the Western Ghats known for its rich biodiversity. Take a boat ride on the Periyar Lake and spot animals like elephants, tigers, leopards, sambar, deer and wild boar. You can also go for a trek in the forest and enjoy the lush greenery and the soothing sounds of nature. Visit the spice garden and learn about the various spices grown in the sanctuary. Don't miss the Kathakali and Kalaripayattu shows, traditional art forms of Kerala, performed in the evening.

  3. Day 3: Idukki Arch Dam
    1 hour 10 minutes (30.5 miles) from Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

    End your trip by visiting the Idukki Arch Dam, one of the highest arch dams in Asia, built across the Periyar River. Enjoy the scenic beauty of the reservoir and the surrounding hills. Walk on the dam and learn about its construction and history. Visit the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary, located nearby, and explore the rich flora and fauna of the region. You can also go for a nature walk or a jeep safari to spot animals like elephants, tigers, leopards, bison and deer.
