Four-Day Family-Friendly Itinerary for Tanjore in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Brihadeeswara Temple
    15 minutes (4.5 km) from Tanjore Railway Station

    The Brihadeeswara Temple, also known as the Big Temple, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest temples in India. The temple is known for its exceptional architecture and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The intricate carvings and paintings on the walls and ceilings of the temple are breathtaking. The temple gets crowded during the day, so it's best to visit early in the morning or late in the evening. Dress modestly and remove footwear before entering the temple premises.

  2. Day 2: Thanjavur Royal Palace and Art Gallery
    10 minutes (2.6 km) from Brihadeeswara Temple

    The Thanjavur Royal Palace was the residence of the Nayak Kings and the Maratha rulers of Thanjavur. The palace complex consists of several buildings, including a Durbar Hall, a Palace Museum, and an Art Gallery. The Art Gallery houses a collection of rare bronze statues, stone sculptures, and paintings. The Palace Museum exhibits artifacts and objects used by the royal family. The palace is closed on Fridays.

  3. Day 3: Saraswathi Mahal Library
    5 minutes (1.2 km) from Thanjavur Royal Palace

    The Saraswathi Mahal Library is one of the oldest libraries in Asia and has a vast collection of rare manuscripts, palm-leaf manuscripts, and books. The library was established in the 16th century by the Nayak Kings and has been expanded by subsequent rulers. The library is closed on Wednesdays and public holidays. Photography is not allowed inside the library.

  4. Day 4: Schwartz Church
    10 minutes (2.2 km) from Saraswathi Mahal Library

    The Schwartz Church, also known as the New Jerusalem Church, is a Protestant church built by the Christian missionary, Reverend Christian Friedrich Schwarz, in the late 18th century. The church has a unique blend of Indian and European architecture and is known for its stained-glass windows, wooden pulpit, and pipe organ. The church is open from 7 am to 12 pm and from 4 pm to 6 pm.
