2-Day Motorcycle Riding Itinerary in Pondicherry (July 2023)

  1. Day 1: Auroville
10 minutes (3.5 km) from Pondicherry City Center

Start your trip with a visit to Auroville, an experimental township founded in 1968. Known as the City of Dawn, Auroville promotes human unity and serves as a hub for sustainable living. Admire the stunning Matrimandir, an iconic golden dome that serves as a spiritual center for Auroville residents. Take a guided tour of the township's eco-friendly initiatives, visit the art galleries, or participate in a meditation session. Be sure to try the delicious organic food at the Auroville Bakery before leaving.

  2. Day 1: Paradise Beach
20 minutes (9 km) from Auroville

Cool off at the tranquil Paradise Beach, a secluded strip of white sand accessible only by boat. Take a short ferry ride from Chunnambar Boat House to reach the beach, and spend the day relaxing on the shore or swimming in the warm waters of the Bay of Bengal. Rent a kayak or try your hand at beach volleyball. Make sure to bring plenty of sunscreen and drinking water, as there are no restaurants or shops on the beach.

  3. Day 2: Gingee Fort
1 hour 20 minutes (70 km) from Pondicherry City Center

Explore the magnificent Gingee Fort, a complex of three hill forts that served as a strategic military base for the Vijayanagara Empire, the Bijapur Sultanate, and the Marathas. Climb up the steep steps and winding paths to reach the upper fort, where you can admire panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Explore the granaries, temples, and barracks within the fort complex. Don't forget to bring comfortable shoes and a hat, as the fort can be hot and tiring to navigate.

  4. Day 2: Matrimandir
1 hour (45 km) from Gingee Fort

Return to Auroville to admire the iconic Matrimandir at sunset. Take a guided tour of the serene gardens surrounding the golden dome and learn about the spiritual significance of the structure. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and observe the changing colors of the dome as the sun sets. Note that visitors must book a free pass in advance to enter the Matrimandir, and must adhere to a strict dress code.
