Two-Day Itinerary for Mahabalipuram in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Morning at the Shore Temple
5 minutes (1.2 km) from the city center

Start your day off by visiting the Shore Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This temple is one of the oldest in South India and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It's located right by the beach, so you can enjoy the scenic beauty while learning about the history of the temple. The intricate carvings and architecture of the temple will leave you amazed. Make sure to go early in the morning to avoid the crowds.

  2. Day 1: Afternoon at the Five Rathas
10 minutes (3.5 km) from the Shore Temple

After lunch, head over to the Five Rathas, also known as the Pancha Rathas. These are five monolithic temple structures that are named after the Pandavas and Draupadi from the epic Mahabharata. Each of the temples is unique in its architecture and design, and you can spend hours admiring the intricate details. The site also offers a stunning view of the Bay of Bengal.

  3. Day 2: Explore the Descent of the Ganges

The sculpture is massive and stretches across two massive boulders, making it an awe-inspiring sight.

If you have time, we recommend visiting the Krishna's Butterball, a giant and mysterious boulder that seems like it could fall at any moment. You could also head to the Mahabalipuram Beach, which is known for its golden sand and scenic views. To maximize your fun, we suggest hiring a local guide who can give you more information and help you navigate the area. Additionally, don't forget to try the local cuisine, including seafood and traditional South Indian dishes such as dosa and idli.
