4-Day Itinerary for Wayanad in August 2023

  1. Day 1: Edakkal Caves
    30 minutes (12.5 km) from Kalpetta

    Start your trip by visiting the ancient Edakkal Caves, which are famous for their prehistoric rock carvings. You have to trek up a moderate hill to reach the caves, which takes around an hour, offering a scenic view of the surrounding mountains and forests. The caves have two chambers with inscriptions dating back to 6000 BCE. You can also explore the nearby Jain temple and the Edakkal village.

  2. Day 2: Chembra Peak
    1 hour 10 minutes (23 km) from Edakkal Caves

    Visit the highest peak in Wayanad, the Chembra peak, which offers a panoramic view of the region. The trek to the peak takes around 3 hours, and you can camp overnight at the base campsite. The peak has a heart-shaped lake which is said to have never dried up. Make sure to get the necessary permissions from the forest department before the trek.

  3. Day 3: Soochipara Falls
    1 hour 20 minutes (33 km) from Chembra Peak

    Head to the Soochipara Falls, a three-tiered waterfall located in a dense forest. You can trek to the waterfall, which takes around 30 minutes through a rocky path and offers a refreshing dip in the pool at the bottom. You can enjoy the scenic beauty of the Western Ghats and spot wildlife like monkeys and birds along the way.

  4. Day 4: Kuruva Island
    1 hour 30 minutes (40 km) from Soochipara Falls

    End your trip by visiting the secluded Kuruva Island, a river delta surrounded by dense forests and home to various species of birds, orchids, and herbs. You can take a guided tour of the island, which includes trekking, bamboo rafting, and birdwatching. Make sure to carry insect repellent and follow the rules set by the forest department.
