Exploring the Best of Thiruvannamalai in 3 Days

  1. Day 1: Arunachalesvara Temple
    10 minutes (1.3 miles) from Thiruvannamalai Bus Stand

    Start your day by visiting the sacred Arunachalesvara Temple, one of the largest Shiva temples in South India. You can witness the morning rituals and feel the spiritual energy that surrounds the temple. Afterward, visit Virupaksha Cave and Skandashramam, where Sri Ramana Maharshi used to meditate, to get a glimpse of the yogi's life. In the evening, head to the Girivalam path, a 14-kilometer path that circles the holy mountain, Arunachala, and take in the beautiful views of the mountain and the temple.

  2. Day 2: Sathanur Dam and Gingee Fort

    Start your day by visiting the scenic Sathanur Dam, located on the Pennaiyar River. You can enjoy boating, trekking, and birdwatching here. Afterward, head to Gingee Fort, an impressive fortification built by the Chola dynasty. The fort has three different hilltop citadels with walls and gates, and it offers stunning views of the surrounding area. In the evening, return to Thiruvannamalai and indulge in some local cuisine at one of the town's many small restaurants.

  3. Day 3: Manakula Vinayagar Temple and Beaches

    Start your day early and drive to Pondicherry to visit the famous Manakula Vinayagar Temple, a temple dedicated to the Hindu god, Ganesha. Afterward, head to one of the many beaches in Pondicherry, such as Serenity Beach or Paradise Beach, and enjoy swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. In the evening, head back to Thiruvannamalai and visit the Annamalaiyar Temple, famous for its magnificent gopurams and intricate carvings.
