3-Day Family Friendly Itinerary for Wayanadu in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Edakkal Caves
    20 minutes (10.4 km) from Kalpetta

    In the morning, head to Edakkal Caves, a prehistoric site with ancient rock carvings. You’ll need to hike to reach the caves, which takes around 45 minutes. Once there, take your time admiring the fascinating carvings. In the afternoon, visit Muthunga Wildlife Sanctuary for an open jeep safari through the forest. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot elephants, tigers and other wildlife. In the evening, explore the stalls at the Kalpetta Market, where you can buy local spices and handicrafts.

  2. Day 2: Banasura Sagar Dam
    1 hour (27.8 km) from Kalpetta

    Start your day at Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earthen dam in India, where you can enjoy boating and zip-lining. In the afternoon, visit the Wayanad Heritage Museum to learn about the rich history of the region. Artifacts on display include ancient weapons, tribal artifacts and household items. In the evening, head to Pookode Lake, a freshwater lake surrounded by lush greenery. Take a pedal boat ride or just relax by the lake.

  3. Day 3: Chembra Peak
    1 hour 20 minutes (31.7 km) from Kalpetta

    On your last day, hike up to Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanadu. The hike takes around 3 hours and offers stunning views of the surrounding hills and valleys. Remember to obtain permission from the forest office before starting the hike. In the afternoon, visit Soochipara Falls, a three-tiered waterfall that cascades from a height of 200 meters. You can swim in the pool at the base of the falls. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Kerala meal at Jubilee Restaurant in Kalpetta.

Other local attractions worth considering include Thirunelli Temple, a centuries-old temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and the Kuruva Island, a serene island with thick forest cover and a variety of birds. You can also take a side trip to the nearby town of Sulthan Bathery, which is known for its historical importance. To maximize your fun, try to include some outdoor activities such as ziplining, hiking and wildlife safaris.
