Adventure in Kerala - 6-day Itinerary (June 2023)

  1. Day 1: Munnar
    2 hours 45 minutes (88.7 km) from Kochi International Airport

    In the morning, go trekking to the Anamudi Peak, the highest peak in South India. After lunch, visit the Eravikulam National Park and interact with the endangered Nilgiri Tahr. In the evening, relax with a cup of tea at a local tea plantation and watch the sunset over the hills.

  2. Day 2: Thekkady
    3 hours 20 minutes (91.2 km) from Munnar

    In the morning, go for a jungle walk in the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and see some of the rarest animals found in India. In the afternoon, go bamboo rafting on the Periyar Lake. In the evening, watch a traditional martial arts performance called Kalaripayattu, which originated in Kerala.

  3. Day 3: Kumarakom
    3 hours 10 minutes (142 km) from Thekkady

    Take an early morning boat ride through Vembanad Lake, the largest lake in Kerala, and watch the sunrise. After breakfast, visit the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary which is home to various migratory birds. In the evening, take a houseboat ride through the backwaters and enjoy the peaceful scenery.

  4. Day 4: Varkala
    4 hours (147 km) from Kumarakom

    In the morning, go surfing at Varkala Beach, which is known for its great waves. After lunch, visit the 800-year-old Janardana Swami Temple. In the evening, take a dip in the mineral-rich natural spring at the Varkala Cliffs.

  5. Day 5: Kovalam
    1 hour 45 minutes (64.8 km) from Varkala

    In the morning, try some water sports like parasailing and jet skiing at Lighthouse Beach. After lunch, visit the Halcyon Castle, which is now a museum. In the evening, watch a cultural dance performance called Kathakali.

  6. Day 6: Kochi
    3 hours (213 km) from Kovalam

    In the morning, visit the historic Fort Kochi and see the Chinese Fishing Nets. After lunch, explore the St. Francis Church, the oldest European church in India. In the evening, watch a traditional dance performance called Mohiniyattam.

Recommendations

Other attractions in Kerala include the Athirapally Waterfalls, the backwaters of Alleppey, and the hill station of Wayanad. You can also take a side trip to the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu and visit the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai. To maximize your fun, try some local food like appam and stew or puttu and kadala curry. Don't forget to take some spices and tea back home as souvenirs. Lastly, be prepared for the monsoon rains in June.
