3-Day Family Friendly Itinerary for Vayanadu in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Edakkal Caves
    30 minutes (9.8 km) from Kalpetta

    In the morning, visit the Edakkal Caves, a fascinating historical site known for its ancient rock carvings. After a short hike to the caves, explore the inscriptions and artwork dating back to the Neolithic era. For lunch, try the local delicacies at the nearby restaurants. In the afternoon, visit the nearby Soochipara Falls, a picturesque waterfall amidst lush greenery. Take a refreshing dip in the cool water and enjoy the scenic beauty. In the evening, head to the Pookode Lake, a serene lake surrounded by forests. Take a boat ride and spot some wildlife that calls this area home.

  2. Day 2: Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
    1 hour 20 minutes (45.2 km) from Kalpetta

    On day two, explore the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, a vast protected area home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. Take a guided safari through the park and spot some of the animals such as elephants, tigers, and deer. After the safari, head to the nearby Thirunelli Temple, a historic temple nestled in the mountains. Take a dip in the nearby Papanasini river, believed to have sacred properties. In the evening, visit the Banasura Sagar Dam, a picturesque reservoir surrounded by lush green mountains. Take a boat ride and admire the stunning views.

  3. Day 3: Chembra Peak
    1 hour 10 minutes (26.5 km) from Kalpetta

    On the final day, hike up the Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanad. The hike is moderately difficult and takes about 3-4 hours, but the stunning views from the top are worth it. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the breathtaking scenery atop the peak. After the hike, head to the nearby Soochipara Tea Estate, a picturesque tea plantation. Take a tour of the estate and learn about the tea-making process. In the evening, head back to Kalpetta and explore the local markets for some souvenirs to take back home.

If you have more time, consider visiting the Kuruva Island, a scenic river island with dense forests and diverse wildlife. Also, the Ambukuthi Mala, a beautiful hill known for its historic rock shelters, is worth a visit. For a side trip, head to the nearby Coorg in Karnataka, known for its coffee plantations and charming hill stations. To maximize your fun, pack comfortable shoes, sunscreen and insect repellent.
