  • 9:00 AM: Senso-ji Temple
    10 mins (2.2 km) by foot from Asakusa Station

    Senso-ji Temple is Tokyo's oldest temple and one of its most significant. Its main entrance, Kaminari-mon Gate, features a massive red lantern and leads to a long promenade filled with souvenir shops and food stands. Visitors can follow the crowds to Nakamise dori, the covered shopping street lined with vendors selling traditional snacks like fried manju, ningyo-yaki and colorful kimonos.

  • 11:00 AM: Tokyo Skytree
    15 mins (4.4 km) by car from Senso-ji Temple

    Rising to a height of 634 metres, Tokyo Skytree is the city's tallest landmark and one of its top tourist attractions. The tower has two observation decks with breathtaking views over Tokyo, a restaurant, café and a range of shops selling souvenirs and other items. A ticket to the Skytree is a must for anyone visiting Tokyo, especially in the morning before the crowds arrive.

  • 1:00 PM: Meiji Shrine
    35 mins (11 km) by subway from Tokyo Skytree

    Located in Shibuya, Meiji Jingu or Meiji Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken. One of the most popular shrines in Tokyo, visitors can expect to see plenty of traditional elements such as wooden torii gates and a massive straw rope. It’s a great place to see locals practicing traditional Japanese performances such as Tango and Ukiyo-e.

  • 3:00 PM: Tsukiji Fish Market
    20 mins (6 km) by car from Meiji Shrine

    Tsukiji Fish Market is a wholesale market located in central Tokyo. Famous for its early-morning tuna auctions and fresh sushi breakfasts, it's a popular tourist attraction for both locals and visitors. The stalls sell all kinds of fresh fish, shellfish and seaweed, as well as other seafood products like caviar and sake. Visitors can also try their hand at driving a small motorized vehicle known as a tuk-tuk through the crowded stalls, but be sure to get there early; the market closes for tourists at 11:00 AM.

  • 5:00 PM: Tokyo Disneyland
    25 mins (12 km) by car from Tsukiji Fish Market.

    Opened in 1983, Tokyo Disneyland is a theme park based on Disneyland in California and the Magic Kingdom in Florida. Visitors can enjoy various rides, attractions and parades, with some unique experiences at TokyoDisneyland. Adventurous visitors can try 'Indiana Jones Adventure', while younger children might enjoy Alice's Tea Party or 'It's a Small World'. The park is also home to two seasonal events: 'Halloween Horror Nights' and 'Christmas Fantasy'. Snacks and souvenirs are also offered throughout the park, making for a perfect day trip for families.

Transportation

Japan has an extensive public transportation system consisting of trains, subways, buses and taxis. To save some money and explore deeper the city, tourists can purchase the One-Day Ticket for Tokyo Metro & Toei Subway for JPY 900. The ticket offers unlimited use on all Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway lines for one day, excluding JR lines.

Useful Tips

If you have more time, visit more temples and shrines around the city. If you have less time, drop Tokyo Disneyland and Tsukiji Fish Market from your itinerary. Always check the opening and closing times of the places you will visit for the day. It is also recommended to have a cash on-hand, as many places do not accept credit cards.

Airports

Narita International Airport (NRT) is located 60 km east of Tokyo. Tokyo International Airport or Haneda Airport (HND) is located 14 km south of Tokyo. Most international flights arrive at Narita, and it’s easy to get to Tokyo from there by using JR Narita Express (N’EX), Keisei Skyliner, or the Airport Limousine Bus. Haneda Airport mainly serves domestic flights and a few international flights from Asia, making it convenient for tourists booking Asian tours. Tourists that fly to Haneda Airport can take the Keikyu Line, Tokyo Monorail, or Airport Limousine Bus to travel to Tokyo city center.
