3-Day Itinerary: How to Reach Kedarnath, Badrinath via Train in September 2023

  1. Day 1: Haridwar
    10 minutes (3.2 km) from Haridwar Junction

    Haridwar is an ancient city located at the foothills of the Himalayas, it is known for its temples, ashrams, and ghats. Start your day by visiting Har Ki Pauri ghat to witness the morning aarti ceremony. After breakfast, visit Mansa Devi temple and Chandi Devi temple, both located atop hills and accessible by cable car. In the afternoon, visit the Shantikunj Ashram and take a dip in the Ganges river. In the evening, explore the local markets and try some street food like aloo puri and jalebi.

  2. Day 2: Joshimath
    2 hours 50 minutes (162 km) from Haridwar Junction

    Joshimath is a scenic town located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. After breakfast, take a train to Rishikesh and then a bus to Joshimath. On the way, visit Devprayag, the confluence of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers, and the Auli ski resort. In the evening, visit the Narsimha temple and the Kalpavriksha tree, which is said to be 1200 years old.

  3. Day 3: Badrinath and Kedarnath
    1 hour 30 minutes (45 km) from Joshimath

    Start your day early with a visit to the Badrinath temple, one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites. After breakfast, take a helicopter ride to the Kedarnath temple, another Char Dham site and one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The helicopter ride is weather-dependent and subject to availability. If the helicopter ride is not available, you can visit the Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara and the Valley of Flowers National Park instead. In the evening, return to Joshimath.

Other local attractions to consider are the Rishikesh ashrams, the Neer Garh waterfall near Rishikesh, and the Rudraprayag confluence of the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers. You can also take a side trip to the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary or the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary. To maximize your fun, pack comfortable clothing, insect repellent, and sunscreen. Don't forget to carry extra food and water for the journey. Lastly, it is recommended to book your helicopter ride in advance to avoid any last-minute hassles.
