Mumbai in August 2023: A Two-Day Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Gateway of India
15 minutes (4.2 km) from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus

Kick-off your exploration of Mumbai with a visit to the iconic Gateway of India. Built in the early 20th century, the arch monument offers stunning views of the Arabian Sea and is the perfect spot to take some memorable photographs. After enjoying the beautiful scenery, head to the nearby Colaba Causeway, a bustling street market where you can shop for souvenirs and enjoy some street food for lunch. In the afternoon, visit the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (formerly known as the Prince of Wales Museum), a stunning heritage building that houses a vast collection of art, sculptures, and artefacts from India and abroad. In the evening, head to Marine Drive to witness the sunset and take a leisurely walk along the promenade.

  2. Day 2: Elephanta Caves
1 hour 30 minutes (11 km by ferry) from Gateway of India

Head to the Gateway of India early in the morning and catch a ferry to the Elephanta Caves. These UNESCO World Heritage Sites date back to the 5th to 8th centuries and are a must-see for history and art lovers. The caves are famous for their rock-cut sculptures that depict various Hindu deities and mythological events. After returning from the caves, have a late lunch at one of the many seafood restaurants in the Colaba area. In the evening, visit the Haji Ali Dargah, a stunning mosque that is located on a tiny island in the Arabian Sea. The mosque is accessible via a causeway that is only accessible during low tide.

Recommendations

If you have time, consider visiting the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, a stunning cable-stayed bridge that offers panoramic views of the Mumbai skyline. You can also take a side trip to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, a sprawling green oasis that is home to a variety of flora and fauna. To maximize your fun, try some of Mumbai's famous street food such as vada pav, pav bhaji, and bhel puri. Finally, don't forget to experience the city's bustling nightlife by visiting some of the popular bars and clubs in the Bandra and Juhu areas.
