3-Day Wayanand Itinerary for June 2023

  1. Day 1: Edakkal Caves
30 minutes (9.3 miles) from Wayanand Town

Start your day by exploring the ancient Edakkal Caves, known for their prehistoric rock etchings dating back to over 8,000 years. The trek to the caves is a moderate 1.5 km uphill walk, taking around 45 minutes. Spend the morning discovering the history and taking in the stunning views of the Wayanad hills. Afterward, head to Uravu, a village known for its bamboo handicrafts, for some souvenir shopping. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Kerala meal at Jubilee Restaurant in Sultan Bathery.

  2. Day 2: Banasura Sagar Dam and Meenmutty Falls
1 hour 20 minutes (35 miles) from Edakkal Caves

Start your day by visiting Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earthen dam in India. Take a speedboat ride on the lake, or go trekking and enjoy the panoramic views. Next, head to Meenmutty Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in Wayanand. The falls are about a 2km trek through the jungle, so be prepared for a bit of an adventure! Take a refreshing dip in the cool waters and enjoy a picnic lunch here. In the evening, head to the local market in Kalpetta for some shopping and dinner at Hotel Haritagiri.

  3. Day 3: Thirunelli Temple and Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary
1 hour 30 minutes (42 miles) from Meenmutty Falls

Start your final day by visiting the stunning Thirunelli Temple, an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in the Brahmagiri hills. The temple is surrounded by lush greenery and a river that originates from the Brahmagiri hills. Afterward, visit Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary, a haven for birdwatchers, and nature lovers. The sanctuary has several trails, so choose one that suits your preference and enjoy the beauty of the Western Ghats. In the evening, stop by the local tea stalls and try some authentic Wayanand tea before heading back to your hotel.

Recommendations

Make sure to try the local cuisine, including bamboo rice, kadala curry, and pazham pori. If you have more time, consider visiting Kuruva Island, a river delta with lush greenery, or Soochipara Falls, a popular waterfall with a 20-minute trek through a coffee plantation. To maximize your fun, hire a local guide who can give you in-depth knowledge about the local culture and traditions. Finally, make sure to carry a light jacket or sweater, as the evenings can get chilly in Wayanand's hills.
