3-Day Nature Itinerary in Wynad in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Thirunelli Temple
    25 minutes (11.5 miles) from Kalpetta

    In the morning, visit Thirunelli Temple, an ancient Hindu temple nestled in the Brahmagiri hills with the Papanasini River flowing nearby. The temple is surrounded by lush forests and is a great spot for birdwatching. In the afternoon, head to Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary, a hidden gem of the Western Ghats, to spot exotic bird species and for a short trek through the forest. In the evening, relax at the Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earthen dam in India, and enjoy the serene view of the reservoir amidst the green hills.

  2. Day 2: Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
    1 hour 20 minutes (36.3 miles) from Kalpetta

    Start your day at the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, open from 7 AM to 10 AM, to encounter elephants, tigers, leopards, and other wildlife species. Hire a guide and embark on a nature walk or a jeep safari through the dense forests. In the afternoon, visit the Chembra Peak, one of the highest peaks in Wayanad, for a trek to the heart-shaped lake. In the evening, relax and camp under the stars amidst the tea plantations at the Meppadi campsite.

  3. Day 3: Soochipara Falls
    55 minutes (19.8 miles) from Kalpetta

    In the morning, visit the Soochipara Falls, a three-tiered waterfall surrounded by lush greenery and trekking trails. Take a dip in the natural pool at the base of the falls and enjoy the cool breeze. In the afternoon, visit the Edakkal Caves, one of the oldest human settlements in India, and explore the ancient rock carvings and inscriptions. In the evening, witness the sunset at the Kuruva Island, a dense forest in the middle of the Kabini River, and take a bamboo raft ride to spot exotic birds and animals.
