Two-Day Nature Itinerary in Shimoga

  1. Day 1: Jog Falls
    1-hour drive (31 miles) from Shimoga

    Start your day early and head to the majestic Jog Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in India. Witness the breathtaking view of water cascading from a height of 830 feet. Take a walk to the viewpoint and soak in the fresh morning breeze. You can also take a coracle ride at the bottom of the fall to experience the thrill of being close to the gushing water. In the afternoon, head to the nearby Linganamakki Dam and enjoy the scenic surroundings. Take a stroll along the dam and enjoy the view of the backwaters. In the evening, head back to Shimoga and explore the local markets for some shopping and souvenirs.

  2. Day 2: Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary
    1-hour drive (22 miles) from Shimoga

    Start your day with a visit to the Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary, which is home to over 300 species of birds. Capture the beautiful moments and watch the birds in their natural habitat. You can also take a boat ride along the Tunga River to explore the mangrove forests and spot some exotic birds. In the afternoon, head to the Sakrebailu Elephant Camp and spend some time with the gentle giants. You can watch the elephants being bathed and fed by their mahouts. In the evening, head back to Shimoga and enjoy some local delicacies at one of the popular restaurants in the city.

Recommendations

If you have an extra day, you can plan a trip to the Kudremukh National Park, which is a 3-hour drive (70 miles) from Shimoga. You can also explore the Kodachadri hills, which offer some of the best trekking trails in the region. To maximize your fun, you can plan your visit during the monsoon season (June to September) when the waterfalls are in full flow.
