Tanjavur Cultural Immersion Itinerary in May 2023

  1. Day 1: Brihadeeswara Temple

    Afternoon: Sample some of Kumbakonam's delicious South Indian cuisine, which is famous for its filter coffee, idli, dosa, and vada. Visit one of the town's many local eateries and indulge in some authentic Tamil Nadu flavours.
    Evening: Visit the Mahamaham Tank, a sacred tank located in the heart of Kumbakonam. The tank is believed to be connected to all the holy rivers in India and is considered a highly auspicious site for pilgrims. Take a dip in the tank and seek blessings from the deities worshipped here.

Recommendations

If you have time, consider visiting the Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple, another UNESCO World Heritage Site located about an hour's drive from Thanjavur. This temple was built by the Chola dynasty in the 11th century and features impressive architectural and artistic elements.

You can also take a side trip to the nearby town of Trichy, which is home to the famous Rockfort Temple and the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, one of the largest Hindu temples in the world.

To maximise your fun, try attending a traditional folk performance, such as the Karagattam or Oyilattam dance, which are performed in many of the town's cultural centres and temples.

Finally, don't forget to savour some of the local delicacies, such as the Thanjavur bommai mittai (doll-shaped candy), which is a popular souvenir.
